Como ha sido dicho por Dr. Ilan Stavans en unos de sus estudios, “las palabras se infunden con un nuevo significado y una nueva energía.” Esto fue hecho en referencia a spanglish, lo que algunos podrían llamar el nuevo lenguaje americano. Para los que no están familiarizados con este término, Spanglish es una mezcla de dos lenguajes: el español y el inglés. Es algo híbrido hecho por dos culturas que forman una nueva realidad. Spanglish es cuando uno dice, “Do you want to come eat con nosotros?” (Quieres ir a comer con nosotros?) Es cuando uno usa los dos lenguajes y pone las palabras juntas de los dos lenguajes. Es cambiar de un idioma al otro idioma; la mente humana tiene la capacidad de hacerlo a través de lo que se llama el cambio de código. Mencionado en un articulo escrito por Heidi Rontu, "Codeswitching in Triadic Conversational Situations in Early Bilingualism," este cambio de código se define como el cambio de un idioma a otro cuando uno lleva a cabo una conversación. Aparte hacer intercambios entre los lenguajes, Spanglish también puede ocurrir dentro de una sola palabra en sí. Esto significa que la palabra no es ni Inglés ni Español, sino Spanglish; en el libro de Ilan Stavans, Spanglish: The Making of a New American Language, da por ejemplo, jacketa, una palabra para la chaqueta, pero ajustado de manera que incorpore los dos idiomas (151). Spanglish es una mezcla de muchos factores, es la razón por lo cual es tan interesante. Es la combinación de dos culturas y de lo que estas culturas consisten.
Lo que hace esto especial es que no todos pueden participar en esta combinación de culturas. No todos puede tener la capacidad de cambiar entre una lengua a otra de forma simultánea o tener el doble de las cantidades de conocimiento dentro de su cerebro para conocer el material en dos idiomas diferentes. Muchas personas se preguntan cómo le hacen los bilingües. A menudo se pregunta, “si eres bilingüe, ¿en qué idioma sueñas ?” Es sinceramente un tema del cual muchas personas se preguntan y quieren saber. En un video de youtube, “Ilan Stavans: Spanglish: The Making of a New American Language,” published by UCMBtube, publicado por UCMBtube, es mencionado que spanglish es un fenómeno que está empezando a tener un impacto en todo el país y en lugar de llevarlo a un alto, continúa creciendo dentro de la población hispana, sobre todo las generaciones más jóvenes. A pesar de que puede ser visto como algo muy complejo y único, el Spanglish también es recibido con una connotación negativa; para algunas personas ya que el uso de spanglish se asocia con una persona ignorante o incompetente. Igual el hecho de usar el Spanglish en vez de Inglés en los Estados Unidos es mal visto.
El problema con el Spanglish es que incomoda a la gente por las razones cual se han mencionado anteriormente. Sin embargo, no es sólo el acto de combinar dos lenguajes que inquieta a la gente, sino lo que consiste. Como dijo Ilan Stavans, el lenguaje es la forma en que nos presentamos (“Ilan Stavans: Spanglish: The Making of a New American Language.). La razón por lo cual el Spanglish se relaciona con lo inadecuado es porque no es un lenguaje oficial que se ha usado desde el principio como el ingles o espanol. Igualmente, el hecho de que no sea ni aqui ni alla, lo hace incompleto y ahora impropio o falto de educación. Es importante presentar a sí mismo educadamente y hablar Inglés adecuado con el fin de no ser visto con mala conducta, pero ¿qué es exactamente Inglés adecuado para empezar (Stavans 3)? El Inglés ni siquiera es el idioma oficial de los Estados Unidos e incluso consiste de más de un Inglés con varios dialectos varían geográficamente. Hay Inglés negro, Inglés Chicano, el Inglés del sur, etc. ¿Quién decide que sólo uno es correcto cuando cada Inglés está ligado a la misma identidad? Por esta razón, existen los lenguajes privados y los lenguajes públicos (“Ilan Stavans: Spanglish: The Making of a New American Language). Un lenguaje privado es el idioma utilizado en el hogar, tal vez Español, y un lenguaje público es la versión de Inglés estándar el cual se utiliza fuera de la casa, como el trabajo o la escuela. Son diferentes formas de lenguaje que se utiliza de acuerdo con la apropiación del lugar y del tiempo. Entonces, ¿es posible indicar el intelecto por el tipo de inglés que uno usa? El lenguaje es muy complejo y tiene muchas variaciones por todo el mundo.
Aunque Inglés no es el idioma oficial de los Estados Unidos, es obvio que es oficialmente el lenguaje utilizado aquí, no por ley, sino porque simplemente es lo que une a la nación. Esta nación de inmigrantes está compuesto de una variedad de idiomas, culturas, y razas, sin embargo el Inglés es lo que parece mantenerlo unido de manera en que podamos comunicarnos a través de un canal. La pregunta sigue siendo, si no hay documento oficial, realmente que afirme que el inglés es el idioma oficial, ¿quién determinó que sería el lenguaje utilizado a nivel nacional? Fueron los colonizadores que llegaron desde Europa hacia el Nuevo Mundo. Ellos son los que colocaron esta influencia y, desde entonces, el idioma Inglés se quedó. Hoy en día, la interposición de otras culturas en una nueva tierra parece que debería estar prohibido a los ojos de algunos, sin embargo, es exactamente el mismo aspecto como se hizo hace años, cuando los europeos emigraron y se establecieron en lo que hoy llamamos los Estados Unidos de América.
La acción de poder hablar el spanglish requiere que uno tenga sentido con el bilingüismo para saber como usar los dos al mismo tiempo. Spanglish es un lenguaje que se está empezando a usar, pero no solo por esto se considera especial, Spanglish es el poder aceptar e incorporar dos culturas dentro de la vida de un individual. Hoy en dia, hispanos de segunda o tercer generaciones están viviendo en un mundo que envuelve sus raíces hispanas y la americanización que ocurre en los estados unidos. Estos individuales son los que nacieron aquí de padres hispanos que emigraron a los estados unidos. Ellos crecen con padres que vienen de otra cultura y son sumergidos a la cultura americana que permite a estos individuales a poder reclamar las dos culturas. Estos individuos se están mezclando dentro de las culturas y esto les da una identidad multifacética. Escrito en el libro de Sonia Nieto, The Light in Their Eyes: Creating Multicultural Learning Communities, La cultura es multifacética y el lenguaje es dinámico porque todo está en constante cambio. Esta es la razón de la creación de spanglish, porque aunque uno no hable plenamente el inglés o el español, las lenguas cambian a través del tiempo y dentro de las generaciones. La preservación del español en la población adolescente hispano es valioso independientemente de la mezcla. Claro, es bueno saber Inglés y Español, pero la belleza del spanglish es que permite que las personas sean capaces de crecer en un entorno multicultural y sentir valor hacia las dos culturas que influyen sus vidas. Conforme cambian las generaciones, la nación también cambia. La realidad es completamente dinámica ya que está siempre cambiando y adaptándose, y eso es lo que es la vida. A pesar de que el spanglish se puede ver con una connotación negativa y puede parecer como un tabú, tiene su implicaciones positivas que se deben guardar en consideración consciente. Independientemente de por qué puede parecer inadecuado, el arte de spanglish sigue teniendo sentido, dicho sin juego de palabras.

As stated by Dr. Ilan Stavans, “Words are infused with a new meaning and a new energy”. This was in reference to Spanglish, what some may call the new American language. For those that are not familiar with this term, Spanglish is a mixture between two languages: Spanish and English. It’s a hybrid of the cultures forming a new reality. Spanglish is when you say something like, “Do you want to come eat con nosotros?” (Do want to come eat with us?). It’s when one borrows words from the English and Spanish language and pieces everything together from what the speaker chooses to use between the words from the two languages. It is going back and forth from language to language; the human mind has the ability to do this through what is called code switching. Mentioned in an article by Heidi Rontu, "Codeswitching in Triadic Conversational Situations in Early Bilingualism," code switching is defined as switching from language to language as one carries out a conversation. Apart from going back and forth, Spanglish may also occur within a single word of itself. This means that the word is neither English nor Spanish but Spanglish; the book Spanglish: The Making of a New American Language written by Ilan Stavans, gives the example of, jaquet, a word for jacket but tweaked in a way that incorporates both languages (151).
What makes this special is that not everyone can take part in this combination of cultures. Not everyone can have the ability to mentally and verbally switch from language to language simultaneously or to have double the amount of knowledge within your brain to know material in two different languages. Many people wonder how bilinguals do it. It is often asked, “if you’re bilingual, what language do you dream in?” It is honestly a topic that many people wonder and want to know about. In an online video, “Ilan Stavans: Spanglish: The Making of a New American Language,” published by UCMBtube, it says that Spanglish is an upcoming phenomena that is beginning to make a nationwide effect and instead of bringing it to a halt, it continues to grow and grow within the Hispanic population, primarily the younger and coming generations.* Although it can be seen as something very intricate and unique, Spanglish is actually also perceived with a negative connotation to some people for reasons that regard it relating to being uneducated, being incompetent, or just the fact that it is not English or Spanish, therefore, it is frowned upon.
The problem with Spanglish is that it makes people uncomfortable or uneasy for various reasons. However, it isn’t just the act of combining two languages that make people uneasy, it is everything that it consists of. Like Ilan Stavans said, language is the way we present ourselves (“Ilan Stavans: Spanglish: The Making of a New American Language.). The reason to why Spanglish is thought to be related with being inadequate is because Spanglish isn’t an official language that has been used from the start, like English or Spanish for example. Also, since it is neither here nor there, it is viewed as incomplete and therefore improper or uneducated, therefore, the usage of it may be seen with demeanor, but what exactly is proper English to begin with (Stavans 3)? Dr. Stavans shares that English is not even the official language of the United States and even still the United States consists of more than one English as dialects vary geographically. There is Black English, Chicano English, Southern English, etc. Who is anyone to say that only one is correct when each English is tied to one’s own identity? For this reason, the terms domestic and public language exist (“Ilan Stavans: Spanglish: The Making of a New American Language). A domestic language is the language used at home, perhaps Spanish, and a public language is the English Standard version that most places use outside of the home, like at your job or school. They are different forms of language that one uses according to the place and time. So is it possible to indicate one’s intellect by the type of English one chooses to use? Language is very complex and English has many variations within itself all over the world.
Although English is not the official language of the United States, it is obvious that it is officially the language used here, not by law, but because it is simply what unites the nation. This nation of immigrants is infused with a variety of languages and cultures and races, yet English is what seems to hold it together so that we can communicate through one channel. The question still is, if there was no actual official document that claims English as the official language, who determined it would be the language used nationally? It was the settlers that arrived from Europe into the New World. They are the ones that placed this influence and since then, the English language stayed. Nowadays, the bringing of other cultures into a new land seems like it should be forbidden in the eyes of some, yet it is the exact same aspect as was done years ago when the Europeans migrated and settled in what we now call the United States of America.
The act of being able to speak Spanglish requires that one have a sense of bilingualism in order to know how to use both languages in a way that makes sense. Spanglish is an emerging unofficial language that is being used, however, it is not special in itself just because of that. Spanglish is the act of accepting and incorporating two cultures into one’s life. Nowadays, second or third generation Hispanics are living a world that involves their Hispanic roots and their Americanization occurring in the states. These individuals are those that were born here from hispanic parents who immigrated to the United States. They grow up with parents who come from a different culture and are submerged into the American culture which allows them to claim both. These individuals are blending within the cultures which give them a multifaceted identity. In a book written by Sonia Nieto, The Light in Their Eyes: Creating Multicultural Learning Communities, it is stated that culture is multifaceted and language is dynamic. * It is all ever changing. This is the reason to why Spanglish has emerged, because although one may not be fully speaking English or Spanish, the languages change throughout time and throughout the generations. The preservation made among the Spanish language in the hispanic teen population is valuable regardless of its mixture. Yes, it is good to know both English and Spanish, but the beauty of Spanglish is that it allows individuals to be able to grow up in a multicultural setting and feel value towards the two cultures that influence their lives. As the generations change, the nation changes. Reality is completely dynamic as it’s always changing and adapting, and that is what life is. Although Spanglish can be seen with a negative connotation and may seem like a taboo even, it has it’s positive implications that should be kept at a mindful consideration. Regardless of why it may seem inadequate, the art of it is still meaningful, no pun intended.
